Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and printmaker, co-founder of the artist group **“Der Blaue Reiter.”** He is best known for his vividly colored depictions of animals, which were meant to express spiritual purity and a deep connection to nature.

His **woodcuts**, created mainly after 1911, are characterized by strong formal reduction, clear lines, and an expressive, almost archaic effect. Marc often used animal motifs such as horses or deer, which gained a special power and symbolism through the angular structures of the woodcut. In this way, he combined the raw expressiveness of the medium with his idea of an original, pure visual language.
